Infrastructure

Bennington County has excellent physical infrastructure for modern business:

Transportation. Interstate highways Route 9 (New York Route 9) and Route 7 intersect in Bennington County and connect it with New York State to the west, bringing Albany within less than an hour's drive, to the Berkshires of Massachusetts directly to the south, and within a few hours to points north and west in Vermont, Quebec, and New Hampshire. The Bennington Highway, now under construction, will soon speed up traffic passing to, from, or through the Town of Bennington. Modern air service and good flight connections are available in nearby Albany International Airport, which has recently completed a major upgrade. Bennington's own William E. Morse State Airport handles executive jets and hosts a thriving national express air service. Passenger and freight rail service is undergoing a major upgrade to and through Bennington County. Within a short time direct Amtrack rail service from Penn Central Station in New York City will be available in North Bennington and Manchester.

Telecommunications. Two major fiber optic network based carriers serve the county, namely Verizon and Adelphia Business Solutions. The local fiber network is surprisingly extensive for a rural community. Multiple secondary carriers compete in the market. The telephone system is almost 100% digital. Affordable ISDN, SDSL, T1, T3, and other high speed connections are available now in the county from multiple providers. Contact BCIC for specific references.

Energy. Reliable electricity and other energy resources are available in the county, notably from Central Vermont Public Service (CVPS) and Green Mountain Power. New load industrial customers are often eligible for highly competitive discounts. Contact Bob Justis at CVPS (telephone, 802-747-5692) for further information.

Water. Bennington County is blessed with rich, clean water resources. Municipal hookups are widely available in Bennington and Manchester, e.g., at major industrial and business parks.

Wastewater and solid waste. Public sewage infrastructure with plenty of capacity is widely available in Bennington and Manchester. Solid waste facilities and services are also widely accessible.

Housing. Attractively priced housing is available in Bennington County at all price levels. An aggressive affordable housing program ensures maximum access to quality housing by all employees.

For more information on infrastructure, contact the Bennington County Regional Commission, telephone 802-375-2576.
